Explore Our Surroundings

Exploring the spectacular scenery and historic sites can start right from Hotel can Garay’s garden if you so choose. The Via Verde ((Greenways) cycle path and the waterfalls are a stone's throw from the hotel's garden, perfect for gentle strolls, more demanding hikes or exploring by bike.

Less than 10 minutes on foot:

  • The historic centre of the village: Les Planes is full of charm with its historical streets, one of the very few old public wash houses left in La Garrotxa, the Angel drinking fountain and the tiny chapel of the Guardian Angel (1539).
  • Can Poeti Gorge: Whether you are a wild swimmer or a born romantic, Can Poeti’s natural pools are great place for a stroll and a picnic. A popular spot with the locals, a series of natural pools cascade down into the main pool surrounded by trees providing welcome shade in the hot summer months.
  • Ponts Petits: A pretty spot popular with families and children lies just behind another architectural gem of the village, the Art Nouveau primary school.
  • Via Verda:Greenway (Via Verda): The Via Verde initiative has introduced environmentally friendly tourism into rural areas by utilising the existing abandoned railway infrastructure. Heading north and gently rising to Olot (23 km) this part of the cycle path is considered a particularly beautiful section. Heading south is the village of Amer, only 7 km away.

30 to 70 minutes on foot:

  • Hostoles Castle and Puig Alder Castle: Both strongholds hold an important place in the history of the 15th century peasant uprising and offer spectacular views of the snow-capped Pyrenees and the vale of Girona. One of the nearest volcanoes in the Garrotxa volcanic park lies just below the Puig Alder castle.
  • The waterfall Trail: A spectacular circular route around some of the most iconic waterfalls in the Hostoles valley, such as Gorg de la Plana, Gorg del Molí dels Murris and Gorg de Santa Margarida, amongst others.
  • Centenary Oak: A monumental holm oak tree that lies in the heart of a magnificent forest. The path that leads you there is like a passage into another world as you go through a moss-scented tunnel of green oaks with the sunlight filtering through the branches. For the more adventurous, you can follow the trail to the top of the mountain, El Far (1,100m high), where, on a sunny day you can see as far as the Costa Brava. Behind the Sanctuary of La Salut, you can follow the path to a magical beech forest where the mysterious “Enchanted Rocks” are.

Less than 1 hour by car:

  • Olot and the Fageda d’en Jordà (20 km): Known as the city of volcanoes, Olot lies at the heart of the volcanic area. It boasts Art Nouveau architecture, medieval cloisters and a vibrant cultural scene.
  • Besalú (40 km): One of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Spain, famous for its impressive Romanesque bridge and the vestiges of its Jewish past.
  • Girona and the Jewish Quarter (32 km): A historic city between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava. Its old town with its unique mix of Roman, Arab and Christian influences breathes history and culture. The famous cathedral houses the “Creation Tapestry”, a Romanesque textile masterpiece.
  • Costa Brava (54 km): A rugged coastline with hidden coves and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a refreshing dip before returning to the tranquillity of the mountains.
