The historic centre of the village – Les Planes is a village full of charm with old historic streets, one of the very few old public washhouses left in La Garrotxa, the Angel drinking fountain and the tiny chapel of the Guardian Angel (1539).
The Via Verde – The Via Verde initiative was designed as a way of introducing environmentally friendly tourism to rural areas by utilising the existing abandoned railway infrastructure. The resulting greenways gently climb up towards Olot, are free of traffic and are the ideal way to explore for all the family. Hotel Can Garay to the town of Olot is 23kms by bike and is considered a particularly beautiful section. Coming back down from Olot is simply exhilarating, more like flying than cycling!
Can Poeti’s natural pools – Whether you’re a wild swimmer or a born romantic, the natural pools at Les Planes d’Hostoles are the perfect spot for a stroll and a picnic. A popular backdrop for numerous films and adverts, the series of natural pools cascade down into the main pool surrounded by trees providing welcome shade in the hot summer months.
The Little Bridges – This pretty spot, popular with children, lies behind another architectural gem of the village, the Art Nouveau School.
Hostoles and Puig Alder Castles – Both strongholds hold an important place in the history of the peasant uprising of 1463-72 and offer stunning views over the surrounding countryside from the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenées to the Vale of Girona. One of the nearest volcanoes in the Garrotxa Volcanic Park lies just below the castle of Puig Alder.
The waterfall trail – A spectacular circular 2-hour trail around three of the most beautiful waterfalls of the Hostoles valley.
The San Pedro Sacosta Church – Starting from Las Planes, if you follow the yellow trail signs into, and beyond, the forest, you will discover the Pere Sant Costa church (1207) which marks the site of one of the oldest hamlets in the valley. Both church and hamlet were destroyed by earthquakes in 1427 but mass was still said until the end of the 19th century in the partially renovated church and it was further restored in 1987 by the people of Les Planes D’hostoles. The route takes you through a magnificent holm oak forest where the sounds of civilisation fade into the blissful solitude of birdsong and you can peacefully stroll along enjoying the colours and wildlife of its 100 year old heritage. For the more adventurous, you can follow the trail right to the top of the mountain, El Far (1000m high) where, on a sunny day, you can see as far as the Costa Brava.
Olot – the capital of la Garrotxa; a quiet market town and a stone’s throw from the Volcanic Park and the famous Jordá beech forest (20 km)
Besalu – famous for its impressive Romanesque bridge and the vestiges of its Jewish past. One of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Catalonia (40 km).
Girona – the walled, medieval old town boasts one of the most well-preserved Jewish quarters in Spain and is not to be missed. (32 km)
The Costa Brava – only 54km away. Take advantage of the luxury of being able to take a dip in the Mediterranean and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch before returning to the peace and quiet of the mountains for some hearty Catalonian home cooking.
Whether cycling or walking, you’ll be spoilt for choice with all routes and trails starting right from our garden gate!
